RAA Pymbrah Road car park raingardens
Mile End

Project planning & design

The RAA Mile End staff car park development included the installation of two raingardens in the design of their new secure car park to be built on the corner of Pymbrah Road and Birmingham Street, Mile End.

The project site was chosen by the RAA for multiple reasons:

  • Improve run-off water quality to the minimum state-wide performance target.
  • Reduce quantity of run-off into the stormwater system.
  • Contribute to the coastal water quality improvement and promote improvement in the health and establishment of seagrass.
  • Promote biodiversity through establishment of native species within the facility.

The stormwater runoff from this new car park will now be slowed down and filtered before it enters the stormwater drainage system.

WSUD features & design criteria

The site used to be a disused industrial block. During the building process it was discovered that there were crushed brick and slag deposits throughout the block as well as a disused SAPN high voltage pit that needed to be demolished, filled, and compacted. Because both raingardens were situated away from the curbside, they both have sumps that collect the storm water after it has filtered through the raingarden and then pump it to the nearest stormwater outlet point. Stormwater from the whole area feeds to the Patawalonga catchment.
