South Australian Councils have identified a need to improve water sensitive urban design asset maintenance programs to enhance or restore functionality of those assets. In addition, we expect that over the next two years more SA Councils will look to outsource maintenance of their WSUD assets to landscape and civil contractors. This course is an opportunity for Councils to build in-house capacity, or for contractors to set themselves apart and become a specialist in this field.

Course content
- identify maintenance and rectification issues, including simple ways to rectify underperforming WSUD assets via case studies
- condition assessment audits
- plan and undertake maintenance of sedimentation basins, bioretention swales/basins, raingardens, constructed wetlands and sedimentation ponds
- unit rates for the range of maintenance activities identified for the asset types
- develop the case for improved maintenance regimes and associated budgets
- site visit(s).
Core competencies attained
- Awareness of the activities required to maintain WSUD assets and typical frequency of maintenance activities, for both civil and landscape works.
- Participants have the skills to carry out maintenance inspections of WSUD assets using supporting checklists.
- Appreciation of the cost of maintaining WSUD assets.

Dr Robin Allison, DesignFlow
Robin is a founding Director of DesignFlow, a specialist water sensitive urban design consultancy based in in SA, Victoria and Queensland.
He has more than 20 years’ experience in stormwater management and in particular integrating WSUD into urban spaces to protect aquatic ecosystems while enhancing people’s enjoyment and appreciation of water.
He has delivered projects from streetscape scale to regional wetlands and a focus is often on retrofitting systems within constraints of existing urban areas. All of the systems employed use vegetation as a key driver of water quality improvement and promote green infrastructure.
Jason Sonneman, DesignFlow
Jason is an aquatic ecologist with expertise in water resource assessment and management. He has over 14 years experience working on the ecology of marine and freshwater ecosystems, particularly urban streams and wetlands. His experience includes developing integrated approaches to urban water management and the innovative use of water sensitive urban design concepts within urban development projects at many scales. This includes the modelling of catchment runoff and the design of stormwater treatment and harvesting systems such as wetlands and bioretention systems. He has specialist skills in ecosystem assessment and management, environmental impact assessment and statistical analysis of environmental data.
