During 2025, Water Sensitive SA is working with IPWEA and a large contingent of other partner organisations across South Australia on the Asset Management for Green Infrastructure Project to create best practice guidance on the effective inclusion of natural assets into registers, valuation methods, condition assessment practices and maintenance regimes for more effective asset management. The LGA SA is co-funding the work through the Research & Development Scheme.
Green infrastructure is the collective term for vital natural assets such as creeks, beaches, street trees, mangroves, swales, raingardens, local parks and coastal reefs that provide important habitat, ecosystem services and natural hazard protection in our neighbourhoods and cities.
Modern green infrastructure seeks to reconstruct natural assets to improve the liveability of suburbs, support climate resilience, restore habitats and natural systems and alleviate storms, floods, extreme heat, water pollution and coastal erosion.
Water sensitive urban design supports green infrastructure. It ensures these natural assets are designed, constructed and maintained to deliver many benefits, are protected from the impacts of modern urban cities and function to provide new, healthy landscapes.
IPWEA is leading a project to address current challenges within local council asset management frameworks to effectively recognise natural assets and adopt them into existing long-term financial systems. This will ensure their lifecycle is planned, renewed and upgraded alongside more traditional asset classes.
